Journalism education is at a crossroads. The accelerating rise of artificial intelligence, the proliferation of disinformation, and intensifying global interdependence demand that educators reimagine how future journalists are trained for global society. This study investigates how journalism programs can cultivate intercultural competence, digital information literacy, and ethical engagement with AI, thereby preparing students to become global journalists who serve citizens across borders.

Drawing on my Ph.D. research, which employs a mixed-methods design and a large-scale global survey, the project analyzes curricula, teaching materials, and student projects from programs in multiple regions, complemented by interviews with educators and media professionals. A U.S.-based international journalism course serves as a case study to pilot curriculum modules embedding global perspectives, AI ethics, and collaborative cross-border reporting practices.

Preliminary findings reveal sharp disparities in how institutions address technological fluency and ethical reasoning: while restrictive political contexts often curtail open inquiry, innovative programs in the Global South demonstrate adaptive strategies for teaching critical media skills under resource constraints. These contrasts highlight the urgency of developing a flexible yet globally relevant framework for journalism education.

By situating journalism training within the broader educational imperatives of Technology and Artificial Intelligence, Humanity and Human Intelligence, Global Citizenship and Education for Peace, and Leadership, this paper argues for a decolonized, inclusive, and forward-looking pedagogy. It contributes actionable insights for educators and policymakers committed to preparing journalists who can navigate AI-driven media environments, safeguard democratic values, and foster peace through informed global dialogue.
