Session: Session 3
Room: Room 116 (1F)
Presentation Type:Oral Presentation
This presentation investigates the interplay of verbal and visual media in the life writing of artistic women at the turn of the twentieth century, focusing on how these forms served as tools for self-fashioning and cultural resistance. Employing an interdisciplinary framework that bridges literary studies and art history, the study analyzes autobiographical narratives and visual self-portraits to trace evolving notions of femininity, authorship, and artistic identity within the context of Modernism. It argues that by engaging with multiple modes of expression, these women not only contributed to the development of Modernist aesthetics but also subverted prevailing artistic hierarchies and gendered traditions. The analysis demonstrates how their creative strategies enabled them to assert agency, achieve visibility, and attain international recognition despite the structural barriers imposed by their social milieu.
