Knowledge Co-Production in Educational Tourism: Multiplying Contextual Learning in Egypt and Namibia (105093)

Educational tourism lies at the intersection of education, travel, and community development, creating opportunities for meaningful knowledge exchange. By fostering knowledge co-production between community members, travelers, and academic experts it strengthens the sustainability of learning by extending it beyond institutional settings and rooting it within everyday local realities. Through this collaborative process, educational tourism evolves into a dynamic platform for community development, integrating formal educational practices with the lived experiences, values, and place-based knowledge. This research examines educational tourism as a means of facilitating knowledge co-production, supporting contextual development, and strengthening community integration. Based on in-depth case studies in Egypt and Namibia, it draws on two months of fieldwork in each site, incorporating eighty narrative interviews and five focus group discussions with community members, academic travelers, and tourism managers. The study shows that educational tourism creates inclusive learning spaces in which tourism management acts as an active connector between communities and travelers. Within these spaces, knowledge is continuously shared, negotiated, and adapted to local realities. Findings reveal that by enabling knowledge co-production, educational tourism not only broadens the educational impact for students and travelers but also empowers communities to craft solutions aligned with their socio-ecological needs. This integration fosters collective action and amplifies the voices of marginalized groups engaged in the process. Ultimately, knowledge co-production within educational tourism emerges as a transformative approach that links education, sustainability, and social integration across diverse contexts.
