Primary sources—whether physical, digitized, or born-digital—can be excellent resources to consult during the research process across multiple disciplines. In particular, there is a gap in the research relating to the implementation of primary sources in the business classroom to build primary source literacy and information literacy skills among undergraduate business students. The author of this study is a business librarian and instructor and has identified a need for primary source literacy from past business students who communicated a desire to learn more about using primary sources and archives to conduct business research. The author addresses this need in her study while adhering to the Association of College & Research Libraries (ACRL), Rare Books and Manuscripts Section (RBMS), and Society of American Archivists (SAA), Guidelines for Primary Source Literacy to effectively meet student needs. Because case-based learning can be an excellent way for students to practice applying their information literacy skills in a realistic business case scenario, the author developed a case scenario for her students to help them build primary source literacy skills. The research questions for this study are as follows:
R1: Which of the ACRL RMBS-SAA Guidelines of Primary Source Literacy were met in the pedagogically developed case-based learning scenario? To what extent?
R2: What is the role of the affective experience in research, if it occurs?
This presentation details the results of this activity, lessons learned, and recommendations for implementation.
