Primary source literacy is a topic well worth exploring in an information literacy context, as primary source research methods be applicable across many disciplines. The broad concepts of information, culture, and society have been closely linked to one another over time. In “ILS 300: Information, Culture, and Society,” a foundational information literacy course for an Information Studies minor, students explore how information, culture, and society influence one another. As part of this course, students examine the creation, dissemination, and use of primary sources, in order to grow their primary source literacy skills. In an assignment rooted in the Association of College & Research Libraries (ACRL), Rare Books and Manuscripts Section (RBMS), and Society of American Archivists (SAA), Guidelines for Primary Source Literacy and its core ideas and learning objectives, students select a decade prior to the year 2000 and examine primary sources relating to the creation and dissemination of information from that time period. In this assignment, students locate, interpret, and analyze primary sources through a guided activity to examine how people created and shared information during the chosen time period. Students are exposed to the broad range of extant primary sources across varying media formats. They are also instructed to examine different digitized primary source repositories across a broad range of fields and disciplines. The author is an instructional businesss librarian and information specialist at the university level and will detail the outcomes of this activity, lessons learned, and suggestions for implementation.
