As artificial intelligence (AI) becomes increasingly integrated in the educational process, understanding user perceptions is critical for effective implementation. Using Student Academic Support Services (SASS) of the American College of Greece as a case study, the presentation explores how college-level students perceive the use of AI-based tools in academia. A survey consisting mainly of open questions, is asking all students who are utilizing SASS during Fall 2025 and Spring 2026 semesters to respond to a few questions related to AI use. This survey has yielded so far 129 responses from unique users. Using these responses as the foundation for its claims, this presentation examines attitudes and perceptions toward AI’s role in the process of learning in academia. In addition, it explores the benefits or drawbacks of AI as perceived by students. Preliminary findings suggest a mix of enthusiasm and skepticism, with concerns about accuracy. The presentation discusses findings by comparing respondents along various characteristics such as number of credits, grade average and gender. In addition it evaluates the responses along different kinds of support, comparing writing support to support for quantitative courses. Building on existing research, but emphasizing the cultural context of Greece, the presentation attempts a discussion on how these insights can inform AI policy making and use of AI in the classroom. This session will engage educators, administrators, and technologists in a conversation about optimizing AI’s role in academic support, ensuring it aligns with student needs and expectations.
