The accelerating global integration of AI technologies has led educators to critically re-examine pedagogical designs that support the concurrent evolution of academic contexts and machine learning. While AI holds considerable potential as an indispensable tool, its disruptive nature necessitates careful consideration of ethical value trade-offs. This mixed-methods study investigated the effects of generative AI-enriched transdisciplinary biology instruction on learners’ digital citizenship, conceptualized as a composite of six normative dimensions guiding appropriate and responsible technology use. The study involved 92 undergraduate students from three intact classes: two GenAI intervention groups (UGTBI and GTBI) and one non-GenAI comparison group (CBI). Quantitatively, the research employed a three-group quasi-experimental design. Data were collected through pre- and post-intervention measures of the students’ digital citizenship using a scale. Qualitatively, the study adopted a multiple case study design, drawing on data from instructional worksheets collected during the seven-learning cycle intervention, as well as post-intervention reflection sessions and focus group discussions. Results from a one-way MANOVA indicated a significant multivariate effect of the intervention. Subsequent univariate follow-up analyses showed significant group differences across all dimensions. From the emerging code perspective, some of the themes that surfaced included improving citation practices, fostering respect for intellectual property, enhancing information evaluation skills, exploring digital autonomy, and exercising caution in online environments. Joint data display and meta-inferences revealed convergence between quantitative and qualitative findings, indicating that the UGTBI and GTBI groups scored higher in four of six dimensions of digital citizenship.
