The field of graphic design is undergoing structural transformation due to the rapid development of artificial intelligence technologies, which are reshaping creative production processes and redefining the role of the contemporary designer. This study investigates the impact of generative artificial intelligence on graphic design practice through creativity theory and technology-adoption frameworks, focusing on how designers negotiate efficiency, creative control, and professional identity when working with AI-assisted tools.

Grounded in Maxwell’s Interactive Research Design Model, this research adopts a mixed-method experimental approach integrating theoretical inquiry with applied design practice. The study was conducted using random sampling with undergraduate graphic design students and graphic design professionals of several nationalities residing in Turkey (n = 34). Participants produced a visual design project using traditional digital tools and then recreated the same project using generative AI systems, enabling comparative evaluation of production time, visual output, and design decision-making across two design environments.

Quantitative data were collected through structured surveys measuring perceived creativity, efficiency, and technology acceptance. Qualitative data were obtained through semi-structured interviews and analysed using Barun and Clark’s reflexive thematic analysis to identify recurring patterns in designers’ perceptions and adaptive strategies in AI-assisted workflows.

Findings indicate that generative AI tools significantly increased production speed and supported rapid visual experimentation, while raising concerns regarding originality, authorship, and foundational design skills. The study concludes that AI will transform design toward hybrid human–algorithm collaboration, contributing to debates on creative labour, design education, and AI-mediated visual culture.
