Global citizenship education, introduced by UNESCO, aims to foster a sense of belonging to the world and encourage collective action on global challenges (UNESCO, 2015). Exchange programs, whether virtual (Giralt et al., 2022) or in-person (UNESCO Beirut, 2022; Rauschert, 2022; Hee Sun Kim et al., 2022), have been shown to enhance global citizenship competencies, though most research focuses on North America or Europe.
This study examines the global citizenship competencies of 31 Indonesian exchange students in Hungary across three programs at two universities. Semi-structured interviews allowed participants to provide detailed accounts of their experiences (Smith, 1995), and qualitative analysis with MAXQDA identified emerging themes. Results show that students developed cognitive, socio-emotional, and behavioral competencies in which they gained knowledge of global issues, fostered intercultural understanding, and felt motivated to contribute to their communities. These outcomes occurred even though most students primarily interacted with fellow Indonesians rather than local or other international students. The findings suggest that exchange programs can effectively cultivate global citizenship competencies among Indonesian youth and offer insights for improving or continuing such initiatives.
