Arts Management is one of the core modules offered by the South African university where I teach. My drive to improve my knowledge of the use of generative AI (GAI) and digital technology in the classroom and to equip my students with the required knowledge and instil in them curiosity about the Arts Management environment led to my setting the following research questions: What are the advantages and disadvantages of using digital and GAI tools in teaching the Arts Management modules? What are students’ experiences with applying the Self-Directed Learning (SDL) approach in order to enhance their learning through technology and GAI tools? My research employed a qualitative approach, using semi-structured interviews and student reflections to gather data from 11 students enrolled in the first-, third-, and fourth-year Arts Management modules. Since SDL encourages students to take responsibility for their decisions, set goals and define the sequence and structure of the necessary activities, I adopted a flexible teaching approach while engaging in interactive conversations with and encouraging critical thinking in this cohort. Thematic analysis revealed two main themes: empowerment – the students found technology and GAI tools conducive to completing assignments and enhancing their learning experiences; and positive engagement – they had a positive experience in applying SDL and taking advantage of having the flexibility to use technology and GAI. The qualitative insights expressed by this cohort highlighted the importance of leading in a transformative environment so as to improve student experiences by promoting autonomy, personalised learning paths and adaptability.
