First year students at the Technical Vocational Education and Training (TVET) colleges are faced with various challenges transitioning to the college. These challenges include insufficient academic support, lack of career guidance, lack of readiness for college, inadequate resources, and financial difficulties. The aim of this study was to investigate transition of first-year students from rural schools to the TVET colleges. This is a qualitative study responding to the research question of how to support first-year students from rural schools at the TVET college to enhance academic performance and attrition rate. Purposeful sampling was used to select eight participants from two TVET colleges in South África, four from each college. The study used Participatory Action Research and focus group discussions with the principles of free attitude interviews to generate data. The ensuing data underwent interpretation and analysis employing the framework of thematic analysis. The findings revealed the need for the TVET colleges to manage transitions throughout the student experience, as it is essential for their success.
