Exploring Experiential Learning in an Early College STEM Academy: An Artifact Analysis Guided by Social Cognitive Career (108907)

This study explores how experiential learning within the Craft Academy for Excellence in Science and Mathematics may support career related learning experiences in STEM pathways. Guided by Social Cognitive Career Theory, the study examines how program experiences reflected in course artifacts align with key SCCT constructs including self efficacy, outcome expectations, interests, environmental support, and skill development. A research team consisting of three student researchers and a faculty research mentor analyzed course reflection artifacts produced as part of normal instructional activities in the MSU 399 Research Scholar course during the Fall and Spring 2025 semesters at Morehead State University. Using qualitative coding methods, the team examined STAR method reflections representing Situation, Task, Action, and Result to identify patterns in experiential learning within the program environment. Artifacts were coded using a deductive framework aligned with SCCT constructs while also allowing for emerging codes when ideas did not fully align with predefined categories. Preliminary analysis indicates that course artifacts frequently reference hands on technical skill development, collaborative problem solving, and mentorship support within the program environment. These emerging patterns suggest that experiential learning structures within the program environment may contribute to the development of technical confidence and sustained engagement with STEM related learning pathways. This exploratory artifact analysis contributes to understanding how structured experiential learning models in early college STEM programs may support career related learning experiences. Insights from this study may inform the design of experiential learning environments intended to strengthen mentorship engagement, technical learning opportunities, and exploration of STEM pathways.
